OnlyTranslate 1.9.0 brings bilingual reading to local PDFs
Alongside web pages, video subtitles, and EPUB books, OnlyTranslate 1.9.0 adds PDFs to Reading and library (Beta). Papers, reports, and other local PDFs can now be read page by page in the browser using your existing translation service.
Open EPUBs and PDFs from one library
Open Reading and library from the bottom of the extension popup, select Import book, and choose a local DRM-free EPUB or PDF. For an accessible online PDF, choose Read this PDF with OnlyTranslate and add it to the library when useful.
The PDF reader saves the current page and whole-document progress, so you can continue from Recently read or the full library. A saved PDF can also be exported in its original form and included in a full library backup and restore.
Choose a view for the reading task
The PDF reader offers Original, Bilingual, Translation only, and Original-layout translation views. Bilingual is useful for checking sentences against the source; Translation only keeps continuous reading compact; Original and Original-layout translation help when charts and page positions matter.
PDF content is not always stored in natural reading order. The default basic layout analysis requires no extra download and suits ordinary PDFs. For multi-column, chart-heavy, or otherwise complex pages, you can explicitly download an optional local layout model of about 23 MB from the reader's More menu. It can be removed at any time, and the reader automatically falls back to basic analysis if download or processing fails.
Original files stay in your browser
Imported or saved original EPUB/PDF files, library data, progress, bookmarks, and the optional PDF layout model stay in the current browser. Original files are not sent to translation providers or the model host. When translation starts, only extracted text that needs translation is sent to the provider you selected. The layout model runs locally.
Still a beta
The current release supports local DRM-free EPUB and PDF files plus accessible online PDFs. MOBI, DRM- or password-protected books, cloud sync, notes, and AI content analysis remain outside the current scope. Complex PDF reading order and layout will keep improving, so basic fallback remains available and the optional model is never a required download.
